The AMD Threadripper 3990X (available 7th February 2020) is the most powerful CPU we have ever seen. It’s basically a 64-core (128 threads) chip that will make mince meat of any and all competitors. It has a frequency of 2.9Ghz that boosts up to 4.3Ghz when needed. And, it has 288MB of cache too. These are all, mind blowing figures for us mere mortals.

AMD also announced the 4000 series of laptop processors that offer significantly better performance than their predecessors. They are built on the Zen2 architecture that features the 7nm process technology.

These chips also feature optimized Radeon graphics that will offer improved performance levels. The 4800H, is the most powerful chip in the series, which is an 8-core (16threads) processor that AMD says has enough power for high-end gaming but can still be power efficient.

According to the company, it offers up to 5% greater single-threaded and up to 46% greater multi-threaded performance than the competition. And is Up to 25% faster at 4K video encoding using Adobe Premier than the competition.

It’s more conservative cousin, the 4800U will offer Up to 4% greater single-thread performance and up to 90% faster multithreaded performance than the competition. In addition to this, it’s also up to 18% faster graphics performance than its rivals.

That said, we will have to wait for the third-party benchmarks to verify AMDs claims. At the other end of the spectrum are the humble Athlon chips that are said to be marked improvements over their predecessors.

Based on the Zen architecture, they don’t quite measure up to the Ryzen series CPUs because are meant for handling less demanding tasks. Itt’s specs are nothing to scoff at, because AMD believes that they are more than able to hold its own against Intel rivals.
