An unlikely partnership between Apple and Google, will bring about cross-platform support for users who are worried about contracting the COVID-19 virus. Both camps are currently working on a project that will utilize Bluetooth technology for contact tracing.

As COVID-19 spread throughout the world, public health organizations have come to realize that identified contact tracing can be a valuable tool in mitigating the spread of the virus. Public health authorities, universities and NGOS around the world have been developing an opt-in contact tracing platform.

Apple and Google will incorporate this tech into their individual apps, which will be made available in May, on the App Store and Play Store respectively. Both companies will release their APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities.

Apple’s COVID-19 information tool is available as an App

Cupertino has already launched a website and app. It’s a screening tool that can answer users questions. Based on the provided information, they will receive CDC recommendations on next steps, guidance on social distancing and self-isolating, how to closely monitor symptoms and when it’s time to contact a medical provider.

In the coming months, Apple and Google will also introduce their Bluetooth based contact tracing platform that will be built on the current contact tracing tech. Apple and Google believe that such a system would be far more effective compared to an API. This way, far more people can opt-in and contribute valuable data to the system.

However, both companies have acknowledged that privacy issues may be a cause for concern to some. And as such, will openly publish information about their work for third parties to scrutinize and ensure that said data isn’t misused. They are also willing to work with other interested stakeholders to continually improve the platform.

These are strange times. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the world economy and healthcare systems. But during these trying times, its comforting to know that people, including Apple and Google, are willing to put aside their petty difference and come together for the common good of our communities.
