Apple may be looking to diversity its production facilities. According to an article by Reuters, Salcomp, a major supplier of mobile chargers to Apple, is looking to invest in India. The Finnish company will sink in 20 billion rupees ($279 million) and re-purpose an old Nokia facility in Chennai to suit its operations.

Salcomp will use this facility to build mobile chargers and other smartphone components, but the specifics of this were not made known. And in case you didn’t know, Apple’s partner Foxconn, already has a manufacturing facility in Chennai.

It was established in 2016, and today, the iPhone XR is made there. There is a good possibility that the latest news is an indication of Cupertino’s future plans. It may be looking to India to help the company temper the fallout of the ongoing US-China trade war.

India has a population of over a billion people, with 50% of that population consisting of people below the age of 25. Allowing easy access to smartphones for such a demographic will give Apple the traction it needs to be a dominant force in the country.
