Bill Gates broke the news in a Twitter post, stating that after a great deal of thought and a lot of work in their relationship, the couple has decided to end their 27-year marriage. The news comes as a shock to most of us because the two have never publicly acknowledged any troubles in their marriage.

The couple believes that they can no longer grow together in the next phase of their lives. Bill and Melinda Gates met in 1987 and got married in 1994. They have three children together, Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe. It’s estimated that Bill Gates has a net worth of $145.1 billion, and its not yet known how the divorce will affect the Gates foundation.

Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, split with Wife McKenzie in 2019 due irreconcilable differences. McKenzie has since remarried to Dan Jewett, a high school chemistry teacher. She has pledged to donate most of her wealth to charity over her lifetime though the charitable giving campaign, Giving Pledge.

The Gates foundation’s philanthropic efforts help combat hunger and medical problems in communities faced with extreme poverty. The foundation has spent $53.8 billion since 2000 to help transform and save lives. They got Warren Buffet to donate a substantial amount of his wealth to the foundation as well, to help with funding.

Since the start, the number of children who have died before their fifth birthday has fallen to half. The Gates foundation has played an important role in many areas, including in the race to develop COVID-19 vaccines. The couple have done a lot of good in the past several decades, so let’s hope that the divorce doesn’t affect their philanthropic work.
