BMW XM Heralds New Era Of SUVs
March 24, 2023BMW Malaysia is all set to introduce the First-Ever BMW XM, which is the first BMW M GmbH high-performance SAV with electrified drive for the Malaysian market in June 2023. The model is set to create an unmatched driving experience, thanks to its seamless BMW M HYBRID drive system, coupled with model-specific M suspension technology.
The production for the BMW XM started last December 2022 at the US BMW Group Spartanburg plant. This exclusive Sports Activity Vehicle is the first-ever BMW M GmbH high-performce vehicle to feature an M HYBRID drive system, thus extending the realm of e- mobility.

This launch marks the dawn of a new era, as for the first time since the introduction of the legendary BMW M1 in the 1970s, BMW M GmbH is presenting an independently-developed production model – one that possesses exceptional specifications in every respect. The special status of the First-Ever BMW XM is reflected in many individual details, with material quality, workmanship, and exclusivity underpinning its exceptional status.
The Outlook
The First-Ever BMW XM is a bold and electrifying reinvention of the traditional SAV. Combining the design language of BMW X models with the performance of BMW M models, the XM features a striking appearance that goes beyond conventional codes and conventions.
The front of the XM boasts a large kidney grille with hallmark M horizontal double louvres and slender, defined headlights split into two separate modules. The sides feature a sloping roofline, tapered rear, and a nightgold-colored trim strip running parallel to the window line. The 23-inch M Light-Alloy Wheels Star Spoke Style 923 M Bicolour Night Gold Accent and charger cap signify its bold and sporty character and status as a plug-in hybrid SAV.
The rear of the BMW XM presents a powerful look with distinctively flared wheel arches and slimline, sharply defined L-shaped taillights. Its two twin tailpipes are arranged vertically, creating a unique interpretation of a signature M feature.
The XM measures 5,110 mm in length, 2,005 mm (2,235 if inclusive of side mirrors) in width and 1,755 mm in height, while its wheelbase measures 3,105 mm. Luggage capacity for the SAV is measured at 527 litres, which is expandable to 1,820 litres.
The XM’s appearance is enhanced by the M Aerodynamics Package, M High-Gloss Shadow Line, and Adaptive LED headlights with High-beam Assistant.
Stunning Interior
The BMW XM is not only impressive on the outside, but its interior is also something to behold. The cabin is defined by the BMW Curved Display, which consists of an Information Display and a high-resolution touchscreen Control Display. The BMW driver orientation is familiar, and BMW M-specific displays ensure that the driver has total control of all driving functions and data at any point in time.
The interior trim finishers in carbon fiber add a touch of sportiness and sophistication to the cabin. The M Leather Steering Wheel, M Seat Belts and M Multifunctional Seats visually denote the M status of the SAV, making it clear that this is not your ordinary vehicle.
But the attention to detail doesn’t stop there. New vintage leather has been used on the door panels and upper sections of the instrument panel. This leather has been treated with a special finishing process to bring out the natural characteristics of the Walknappa leather to perfection.
The SAV comes equipped with active seat ventilation and 4-zone automatic air conditioning control. The driver and front passenger can even enjoy a massage function. Ambient light and BMW Iconic Sounds Electric further enhance the atmosphere within the cabin, while the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System provides in-car entertainment.
Passengers in the rear can enjoy first-class seating comfort thanks to the full-width rear seat bench that curves and encloses them. Finally, the Alcantara headliner with its prismatic 3D structure creates a visual highlight that contributes to a unique sense of space, showcasing workmanship and comfort in the most impressive manner.
The Engine
The BMW XM is the latest addition to the BMW M series and is also the first BMW M model with a plug-in hybrid drive. Combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, this model not only enhances the M performance but also increases efficiency. The XM is equipped with the M HYBRID technology, which features a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine that delivers a total output of 480 kW/653 hp and 800 Nm of torque via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission. This vehicle can achieve a century sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
The XM features the intelligent M xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard, delivering impressive driving dynamics, optimum handling, and maximum traction. The 4WD Sport mode, biased to the rear, allows for superb agility, while the 4WD Sand mode optimizes traction on loose surfaces. The electronically controlled dampers and Active Roll Stabilisation reduce lateral body movements, and the Integral Active Steering ensures greater vehicle stability at higher speeds while improving manoeuvrability at lower speeds.
The high-voltage battery is located deep in the vehicle floor, enabling an all-electric range of up to 88 kilometres. The XM can be charged at up to 7.4 kW at an AC charging station, and a complete charge from 0% to 100% takes 4 hours and 15 minutes.
The XM comes with a standard M Sport brake in Black High-Gloss, featuring 508 mm compound brake discs on the front axle. The cabin is equipped with the BMW Curved Display, M Leather Steering Wheel, M Seat Belts, and M Multifunctional Seats. The First-Ever BMW XM also includes features such as active seat ventilation, 4-zone automatic air conditioning control, massage function, and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.
BMW Cockpit Design
The BMW XM offers a range of advanced digital features and services to enhance the driving experience. Equipped with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, this SUV offers a 12.3-inch Information Display that works in tandem with the 14.9-inch Control Display, providing an uncluttered and intuitive interface. The integrated BMW Head-Up Display also ensures optimal viewing in the driver’s line of sight.
With the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and M-specific BMW Operating System 8, drivers can easily control vehicle functions using natural speech. The BMW XM is also equipped with other digital features, including BMW Gesture Control and Connected Package Professional I, which offers a suite of connected services such as Intelligent Emergency Call, Teleservices, Connected Drive Services, and Smartphone Integration.
Additionally, the BMW XM offers advanced assistance systems to support the driver and enhance the overall driving experience. The Driving Assistant Professional, which includes Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Change Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Lane Departure Warning, Front/Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Emergency Stop Assistant, and Evasion Assistant, is equipped as standard. The Parking Assistant Plus includes Reversing Assist, Lateral Parking Aid, Active Park Distance Control, and Surround View system. Other safety features include the Attentiveness Assistant, Acoustic Protection for Pedestrians, and Active Protection.
