BMW Launches iX1, An All-Electric SAV

BMW launched the iX1, which is the EV version of its X1 Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) model line. It will be available in Malaysia in the M Sport variant with a 230kW/313hp and 494NM of toque from the electric motors that is coupled to a 64.7kWh battery. It offers a range of 440km (WLTP) but that is also dependant on a person’s driving behaviour.

It sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.6 seconds and the vehicle can reach a limited top speed of 180km/h. There’s the Adaptive M Suspension fitted as standards, which automatically adapts to road conditions and driving styles.

The vehicle can be charged using regular AC outlets at up to 11kW or HPC (high power charging) fast-charging at up 10kW which allows you to charge iX1 from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes. The charge management can be done via the My BMW app and Connected Charging. This allows owners to check the charge state and view other related information.

In terms of its looks, the iX1 gets wrap-around adaptive LED headlights with high beam assistant and new daytime running lights as well as 3D taillights in a stylised L-shape. As part of the X design language, the car gets flush door handles. Fitted as standard are welcome lights, front apron with air intake trims and automatic tailgate operation.

Other characteristics include kidney grille surround in Chrome, kidney grille front slats in Aluminium, body-coloured side sill and wheel arch trims, as well as front and rear aprons. Then there’s the M high-gloss Shadowline, M designation on both sides and 19-inch M light alloy wheels in Double-spoke style 871M Bicolour.

As a means to boost the driving feel, the iX1 has the BMW IconicSounds Electric with a newly developed soundscape. The iX1 is the first in its family to feature BMW Heads-Up Display, Harman Kardon Hi-Fi loudspeaker system as well as BMW Live Cockpit Professional with Augmented View.


The iX1 gets a BMW Curved display that is also available on the i4. There’s also a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and 10.7-inch control display, that run the BMW Operating System 8 and fitted with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard.

All vehicle functions can be controlled via the central touchscreen Control Display, the buttons on the M Leather steering wheel or the voice-controlled Intelligent Personal Assistant. A hand rest in front of the Control Display makes touchscreen operation more convenient.

Sport seats come standard for the driver and front passenger but electric adjustment with memory function is only available to the driver. It also has intelligent driver assistance systems, including the Driving Assistant Plus and Parking Assistant Plus.

Other features include Hill Start Assist, Speed Limiter, Attentiveness Assistant, Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention. Front Collision Warning and Left Turn Warning – both with braking function, along with Speed Limit Info and Evasion Assistant.

For the connectivity side you get Connected Package Professional, Connected Drive Services, Teleservices, Smartphone Integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging tray, Intelligent Emergency Call, and tyre pressure indicators. Digital services include Remote Software Upgrade, BMW Connective Drive Upgrades, as well as BMW Maps.

The BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport costs RM 285,800.00 and can be ordered in Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Cape York Green, M Portimao Blue, Storm Bay and Space Silver. Interior upholstery is available in either Alcantara Black with Blue Contrast Stitching, Leather Vernasca Black or Leather Vernasca Mocha.
