According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 2 billion people around the world only have access to contaminated water sources. This leaves them susceptible to many transmittable diseases that include cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.

The WHO also estimates that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas. That said, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic could further complicate matters by causing further disruptions to many sectors that include the food industry.

Access to clean drinking water is a necessity to ensure that we stay healthy. But there are times when this might not be possible. If you are on a hike, stranded due to a natural disaster, lost in the woods or simply unable to gain access to clean running water, there’s a chance that you will be forced to drink contaminated water to survive.

Well, if you had an apparatus that could effectively filter contaminants from said water, there would be no cause for concern. Thankfully such a device does exist. A company called LifeStraw has several filtration products that cater to a wide variety of applications. This includes the LifeStraw Steel, LifeStraw Go, LifeStraw Home, LifeStraw Mission, LifeStraw Community etc.

These devices utilize a two stage filtration process that purifies the water before it enters your mouth. The first stage comprises of a hollow fiber membrane that removes 99.999999% of bacteria (E. coli), 99.999% of parasites (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, etc.), 99.999% of microplastics.

The second stage of the filtration process involves the activated carbon capsule that reduces chlorine, bad odor and tastes as well as organic chemical matter. Take a look at this user manual for more details. LifeStraw’s Steel, the most compact device to own, weighs just 0.23lbs (100g) and is no bigger than a stick of glue, is the most convenient to carry.

However, these smaller devices have certain limitations which include limited storage capacity and the inability to kill viruses. Should you have a need for these features, the LifeStraw Mission, Family and Community should be of interest to you. They can store greater quantity of water and have more advanced filtration systems.

LifeStraw says that its products undergo rigorous independent testing to meet or exceed protocols established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). Here’s the Evidence Dossier, if you’re still a little skeptical about the tech. Prices for these products range from USD39.95 to USD395. Check out the LifeStraw website for more.
