As part of the launch of the new luxury EV, Genesis GV60, Samsung users will be able to use their phones as digital car keys for the first time. You can now lock and unlock your car securely with Samsung Digital Key on your smartphone using NFC and ultra-wideband technology. You can also securely share your car key with your family and friends.

In a series of partnerships announced earlier this year at its Galaxy S21 Unpacked event, Samsung revealed partnerships with automakers. The Genesis GV60 will be the first vehicle to showcase the innovative new technology when it launches in Korea in September.

In comparison with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, Samsung’s digital key uses the same short-range wireless communication technology as UWB, a short-range wireless communication protocol. With UWB, radio waves are transmitted at much higher frequencies, giving mobile devices a much better view of their surroundings due to better accuracy in detecting directions and spatial awareness.

The UWB enables passive entry, ensuring that you won’t have to dig through your pockets and bag to find your keys. The new feature allows you to lock and unlock your car as well as start the engine, open the trunk and adjust the mirror position before getting in, all via your smartphone. You can easily share the digital key with a friend or family member and even put a time limit on how long they will have access to the digital key while you lend them your car.

Samsung has designed an embedded security element (eSE) to protect your most sensitive information and encryption keys, so you never have to worry about lost or stolen keys. In addition to precise UWB technology, there is also the possibility of relay attacks, with jammers or interceptors jamming or intercepting the transmission. Digital keys from Samsung will be fully compliant with the digital key standard as defined by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), a group that Samsung has led from the front.

Genesis GV60 will set the bar for luxurious electric vehicles representing the electrification of the Genesis brand, said Albert Biermann, President of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D division. “Our partnership with Samsung Electronics will help us deliver the experiences our customers expect when they interact with Genesis vehicles.”

By the end of this year, Samsung’s digital key will be available in both NFC and UWB on the Genesis GV60 in Korea. Galaxy S21+, Note20 Ultra, and Z Fold 2 and 3 are all compatible with UWB digital keys.
