OPPO’s First Foldable Smartphone, OPPO Find N
December 15, 2021OPPO unveiled its first flagship smartphone, the Find N, following four years of research and development and six prototypes. The OPPO Find N offers a redesigned user experience, both for those who used foldable devices previously, as well as for those who are new to this technology.
Pete Lau, CEO of OPPO, stated, “New form factors are ushering in a new era of smartphone technology. In order to create a device that fits the needs of a wide range of customers, OPPO has spent a great deal of time and effort creating new form factors, hinge designs, display materials, and aspect ratios. By launching the OPPO Find N, we hope to change people’s perceptions of what smartphones are capable of doing and create a more accessible market for foldable devices.”
Multitasking is essential
It offers a fully functioning compact smartphone when it’s folded and a phablet-like experience when it’s unfolded, which when combined, create better user experiences.
Ratio of the landscape
In a foldable smartphone for the first time, the OPPO Find N has an inner display with a landscape aspect ratio, which ensures a seamless transition between a 7.1-inch internal display and a 5.49-inch outer display for a full smartphone experience, regardless of size or usability. A 8.4:9 aspect ratio allows the inner display to unfold directly into landscape mode without you having to rotate the device.
The Hinge
OPPO Find N’s Flexion Hinge combines 136 components with a level of precision of up to 0.01 mm. The OPPO water-drop hinge design raises the angle of fold during display folding and provides a buffer when the display folds, resulting in a minimal crease that is up to 80% less visible than with other devices, according to TUV. As a result, there is no gap between the displays when folded, providing a more integrated look and better protection of the inner display from scratches.
Flexi Mode
By utilizing a cam and spring structure inside the Flexion Hinge, the device is able to stand at an angle of between 50 and 120 degrees when unfolded. Flexible, foldable display, FlexForm Mode on the OPPO Find N lets users adapt the device to a wide range of usage scenarios.
The user interface of OPPO’s Music, Notes, and Camera apps was redesigned to operate better and more efficiently. As an example, you can take notes without holding the device using the OPPO Find N’s Notes app, which turns the smartphone into a mini-laptop. As well as being able to stand at different angles, the Find N can also serve as a tripod, making time-lapse photography, video calling, and online meetings easy and hands-free.
The Display
OPPO Find N has a 12-layer Serene Display, which is quite durable and offers good protection. Combined with Flexion Hinge, this device is easy to fold. The display includes an ultra-thin Flexion UTG (ultra-thin glass) layer, which is 0.03 mm thick, as opposed to 0.6 mm for normal smartphone glass, which allows it to bend when necessary while providing strong durability.
During tests, it has been folded over 200,000 times while maintaining an overall smooth folding experience with little to no creases, as confirmed by TUV. This inner screen is LTPO and uses smart dynamic refresh rate technology of 120Hz. Users can expect a consistently smooth experience between the inner and outer displays by fine-tuning brightness and color calibration. There are 10,240 auto-brightness levels on both screens, for optimum performance in all types of complex lighting environments.
The Product Software
With an inner display that measures 7.1 inches, the Find N offers 60% more visual area than a standard 6.5-inch device, creating an immersive experience and more opportunities for software innovation.
The OPPO Find N features new gestures to make side-by-side multitasking more intuitive. Using a compatible app, one can easily split the screen in half by swiping down in the middle of the screen with two fingers, or by pinching a full-screen window into a floating window with four fingers. In addition to supporting traditional split-screen gestures, such as long pressing and dragging compatible icons, the Oppo Find N allows you to save commonly used multi-app split-screen combinations to your home screen.
The Camera
High-quality images and videos are made possible by a triple-camera setup at flagship level. The camera has a 50 MP Sony IMX 766 main sensor, an ultra-wide sensor of 16 MP and a telephoto lens of 13 MP, as well as selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays. FlexForm Mode’s adaptability and new form factor together provide a new level of flexibility.
Time-lapse images can be captured in 4K HD with FlexForm Mode at any angle between 50 and 120 degrees, and three templates inside time-lapse mode optimize video and photo settings with one click for better creative astrophotography. The screen automatically moves the image preview to the bottom display when the device is bent at an angle below 60 degrees to make it easier to set up your shot.
The Design
In order to maintain a sleek appearance, OPPO Find N features a 3D-curved design on both outer edges. With its fluid curve design language, the Find X3’s back cover and rear camera module follow suit. With streamlined curves, the camera module appears lower in height, while the Gorilla Glass Victus back panel and ceramic camera plate offer an aesthetic touch and a tasteful finish.
The OPPO Find N comes in three distinctive colors. The Black variant combines glittery matte glass and new film lamination techniques to achieve a subtle and premium shimmering effect on the base layer. The White option is inspired by a white ceramic glaze, with glossy glass and a refined texture that matches the ceramic camera plate to create a consistent feel. The Purple version is reminiscent of a bottle of luxury perfume, using multiple layers of customized films to create illusions of light and shadow with a transparent texture.
The Performance
There are up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage on the OPPO Find N, which is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platform. Battery capacity is at 4,500 mAh, while the 33W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge optimizes charging to 55% in 30 minutes and 100% in 70 minutes.
AIRVOOC wireless charging (compatible with Qi standard) and reverse wireless charging (10W) are also included. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner in the power button of the OPPO Find N. It also comes with a dual speaker system and Dolby Atmos support for an improved acoustical experience.
Sadly, OPPO has no plans to sell this phone in Malaysia. It’s meant to set the stage for upcoming foldables from the company. The Find N’s presence is to prove that it can go head-to-head with the likes of Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi.
