Samsung Galaxy S22+ & S22 Launched: Refined Versions Of Last Year’s Devices

Samsung’s unpacked event today played host to the reveal of the highly anticipated Galaxy S22 flagship phones. Far removed from glossy and glamorous appeal of the S22 Ultra, the slightly lower tier phones feature familiar design aesthetics that made us fall in love with the S21 series phones.

The Galaxy S22+ and S22 are slightly more compact than their predecessors due in part to slightly smaller screens, but are unmistakable as the successors of last year’s flagships. The phones use the same dual tone design that consists of a glossy rear shell, fused with an overlapping camera array. The aesthetics make them look more refined than the phones that they are replacing.

Their metal frames are made with armor aluminum, which is the strongest material Samsung uses in its phones, which promise to offer better sturdiness than traditional frames. The phones are also protected with Gorilla Glass Victus+ for the front display and rear shell, which should provide better protection against bumps and scratches.

The S22 features a 6.1-inch FHD+, super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. This is slightly smaller than last year’s 6.2-inch unit of the S21. And it’s the same story with the S22+ because it has a 6.6-inch FHD+ unit that is a smidgen smaller than the 6.7-inch screen of last year’s S21+. That said, you won’t notice the difference because 0.1-inch deficit isn’t noticeable in the real world.

In real life, they seem broader and more iPhone-like in their appeal, because it seems as though Samsung has put more thought into the overall design and feel of these devices than it did with last year’s devices. They too are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra, which promises to deliver unfettered performance regardless of the application.

As for cameras, both phones have the following identical configuration:

12MP Ultra-Wide Camera – F2.2, FOV 120˚
50 MP Wide Camera – Dual Pixel AF, OIS, F1.8, FOV 85˚
10MP Telephoto Camera – 3x Optical Zoom, OIS, F2.4, FOV 36˚
10MP Front Camera – F2.2, FOV 80˚

Both phones come with 8GB RAM but you can choose between 128GB or 256GB storage options. The larger S22+ comes with a 4,500mAh battery while the S22 gets a 3,700mAh one. But that isn’t the only differentiating factor between the two because the former supports up to 45W wireless charging while the latter only gets a 25W limit. However, but support the usual 15W wireless charging.

Both phones come with IP68 water resistance, which means getting them slightly wet in the rain or other accidental “adventurous” activities should be much of a bother. Samsung is offering the S22+ and S22 in four different color options: Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold.

Expect these new phones to hit store shelves in the coming weeks.
