Samsung Launches Its 5th Gen Foldable Smartphones, The Z Fold5 And Z Flip5

Samsung has finally revealed its latest foldable smartphones, the Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. These fifth-generation phones are an evolutionary step forward compared to their predecessors. As such, they look fairly similar to the devices that they replace. A noticeable improvement however, is the Z Flip5’s larger front display, which is now 3.8-inches.

The increase in size allows you to do a lot more than what was possible with the Z Flip4. It’s possible to use apps, widgets and respond to text messages with a full size qwerty keyboard. It takes up the entire front of the phone as opposed to the letterbox layout of its predecessor. Besides this, there’s a new flex hinge, which allows the phone to fold flat on itself.

Its entire design and build quality have been executed based on the lessons learnt from the last four iteration of the foldable flip phone. This includes better flexcam features for more vertsitle screen adjustments.

As for the Z Fold5, improvements were made under the skin. This means that it looks similar to last year’s device, which isn’t a bad thing. The Fold4 was already a robust and dependable foldable. But the design is starting to show its age in the presence of stiffer competition from the likes of Chinese manufacturers and more recently, Google with its Pixel Fold.

Powering the device is the Snapdragon Gen 2, which offers improved performance over last year’s chip. Screen size and battery capacity remains unchanged from the Fold4, which may not sit well with people who were hoping for a bump in the service life. That said, Samsung promises a long-lasting battery despite the phone having a more capable processor.

For the user experience, you can expect enhanced features like Taskbar, two-handed drag and drop, and a slimmer S Pen Fold Edition. These UI improvements bring the overall usability more in line with proper PCs, which is great news for multitaskers.

Pre-orders for both devices start on July 26, 2023, with general availability from August 11.
The Galaxy Z Flip5 is available in Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender. However, the Galaxy Z Fold5 is available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream.
