Samsung reveals Galaxy Book Flex and Ion
October 30, 2019Samsung’s new slew of laptops offer a bevy of interesting features. They are the Galaxy Book Flex, which is a 2-in-1 machine and its sleek clam shell cousin, the Galaxy Book Ion. Both feature either a 13.3 or 15.6-inch 1080p QLED displays (600-nit brightness), a first for laptops,
which is said to offer vivid and true-to-life visual experiences.
Both laptops sport a similar exterior look, but the Galaxy Book Flex’s front bezels and body’s underside feature a Royal Blue colour, which might not be to everyone’s taste. The Book Ion on the other has a business-style aesthetic “Artic Silver” color and weighs a minuscule 0.97kg, slightly lighter than the Book Flex, which is 1.15kg.
Intel’s 10th gen Ice Lake chips will power both devices, which are also being offered with up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM, up to 1TB SSD (NVMe) (15.6-inch Ion has extra SSD an RAM slots), Wi-Fi 6, AKG Stereo speakers and a 720p webcam. Such specs are indicative of machines that will spend most of their time out and about, which is why both are fitted with 69.7Wh batteries.
But the most noteworthy feature of the Book Ion is its ability to wirelessly charge smartphones or other accessories. Devices capable of wireless charging need to be placed on the the laptop’s touchpad, then, charging begins. Many won’t consider it useful especially considering that it hinders the use of said laptop, but’s a novelty that we welcome.
Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0 and MicroSD Combo slot are available for both laptops but the Book Ion also comes with a full size HDMI slot. Despite being ultra thin, Samsung didn’t skimp on ports, which will also reduce the need to pack several different dongles for a trip.
According to Samsung, the Book Flex is aimed at creative types and those with active lifestyles. The included S pen features gesture controls that enable certain functions with a mere flick of the wrist. When used with the dedicated app, the S pen offers a whole host of functions, which include switching through PowerPoint slides and skipping past a video.
Both the Galaxy Book Flex and Ion will be available to order in select markets starting December. No word yet on pricing but that should be revealed in the coming weeks.
