Samsung’s A33 5G & A53 5G: Better Looking, Bigger Batteries & 5 Years Support

March 17, 2022 Off By Rowena Cletus

Samsung has launched its new A33 5G and A53 5G at its recent A Series event held on March 17th. The introduction of these updated models puts them in line with Samsung’s more grown-up design language. Both phones use the tweaked version of the clean yet minimalist look of the A52 and S21 FE 5G, which should be to the liking of a wider demographic.

The Korean giant has been more than generous this year with its mid-range devices. It has thrown in higher capacity batteries, AI powered rear cameras that support optical image stabilization (OIS), higher refresh rates and IP67 water & dust resistance. These incremental upgrades boost the phone usability, enabling them to serve users for longer.

Unlike its predecessor, the new A33 5G is a spitting image of its bigger brother, the A53 5G. It has the same unibody rear shell with a protruding section to house the camera array. It has a 90Hz, 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display (protected by Gorilla Glass 5) that should be able to provide longer service life thanks to the 5,000mAh battery.

The phone gets a 48MP main camera with OIS, 8MP ultra-wide, 5MP Macro and 2MP depth sensor. This makes its setup slightly superior to its predecessor, especially when it comes to taking videos, which should be more stable and with fewer interruptions. On the front there’s a 13MP front camera, which may not be groundbreaking but will surely get the job done for most social media users.

The phone costs price RM1,499.00 and is available to order now in four different colors: orange, white, blue and black.

Picking up where the A52 left off, the A53 5G features a similar unibody rear shell except that it looks more premium thanks to a better choice of materials. In terms of hardware, the phone gets an “incremental” bump that makes it a little faster and better at accomplishing tasks than its predecessor.

The Octa-core chip can be paired with either 6GB or 8GB RAM and choice of either having 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. It too has a microSD card slot that can support up to 1TB of storage space.

At the front is a 1080p, 120Hz, Super AMOLED display that has an improved brightness algorithm to help ensure that what’s displayed on screen is clearly visible regardless of ambient lighting conditions. Despite this, Samsung says that its 5,000mAh battery can deliver up to 2-days battery life. This is far better than the 1.25 days offered by the A52s 5G.

At the front is a 32MP selfie camera and the rear camera array consists of a 64MP main sensor with OIS, 12Mp ultra-wide, 5MP depth and 5MP macro cameras. They rely on AI technology to take the best pictures possible even in low lighting conditions. In night mode, the phone synthesizes up to 12 images at once to ensure that night shots look bright and are less noisy.

The depth and macro lenses ensure that each portrait shot captures the right amount of depth and subject outlines for a more accurate shot. Samsung’s A53 5G leans on AI here as well, to produce better and brighter pictures. The same is true of recording videos. The phone adjusts the camera frame rate automatically to compensate for the lighting conditions to ensure better video quality.

Besides being protected by Knox Security, the new phones also support Samsung wallet, so you can take your ID and credit cards with you even if you’ve left the physical ones at home. This is one of several features that were once only available to the flagship models.

Lastly, Samsung is promising that the A53 5G will receive four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades, and up to five years of security updates. This is the same level of support it pledged for the Galaxy S22 series as well as the S21FE 5G.
