Sony has just introduced the world’s most compact, full frame camera on the market. Measuring only (124.0mm x 71.1mm x 59.7mm) and weighing just 18oz (509g), The Alpha 7C is only slightly heavier than the A6600, despite being constructed from a magnesium-alloy. It’s also paired with the smallest and lightest FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 standard zoom lens. (camera is dust and moisture resistant)

Despite being smaller, it retains the same capabilities of any full frame camera. It has a 24.2MP, 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processing engine. It is aalso said to offer high sensitivity and resolution as well as a15-stop wide dynamic range and high-speed image data processing.

The camera also has a 5-step image stabilization, that Sony says negates the need for a tripod. This is impressive considering, the level of versatility that such system can offer, especially when capturing spontaneous action shots. Its standard ISO extends up to 51,200 and is expandable from ISO 50-204,800. And is also able to keep the noise level quite low, at these ISO settings.

Using AI, the camera’s real time tracking keeps the subject in focus with decent accuracy. The “Tracking On + AF-On” is now assignable to a custom key and can be activated at once while the AF-ON button is pressed. Its real-time Eye AF works on both humans and animals, and the “Face/Eye Priority in AF” offers extremely precise tracking abilities of human subjects.

This is due to the 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system covering approximately 93 percent of the image area. There’s also the additional 425 contrast-detection points to ensure reliable focusing, regardless of how much is going on in the background. The camera also supports 10 fps continuous shooting, and in live view, users can shoot at up to 8fps.

Putting that into perspective, with a single, continuous burst, the A7C can capture 223 JPEG (Fine L) images, 115 compressed RAW images, or 45 uncompressed RAW images. It can capture 4K video (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) and supports HDR (HLG) and S-Log/S-Gamut profiles, Slow & Quick motion, high-speed full HD recording at 120 fps.

A digital audio interface has been added to the camera’s Multi Interface (MI) Shoe. This means that a ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR adaptor kit can be connected directly to the MI shoe for a less cluttered and clearer audio recordings. There’s still a headphone and microphone jack available to connect external third-party gear.

As for connectivity options, the camera supports WiFi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and a USB-C port for data transfer and power delivery from external batteries. But Sony says that the internal battery offers decent power for long shooting sessions. On a single charge and while using the LCD monitor, it can capture 740 images.
