Spotify Music Awards, user data decide winners

In March next year, Spotify will be conducting its very first awards show. The event will be held in Mexico City, Mexico. Despite what you might of thought about streaming popularity, the Mexican capital has the largest population of Spotify subscribers in the world, far greater than that of New York, London and Paris.

Winners of the awards show will be chosen entirely from user-generated data from all categories which include hip-hop, rock, reggaeton, banda and cumbia. Spotify is pitching this as an unbiased and fan-driven awards show.

Unlike a conventional music awards ceremony, Spotify’s event might actually deliver on its promise. If the only criteria for winning is popularity, then this could promote pure singing talent rather than other lesser factors, which include appearance and marketing power.

Spotify says that our plays, patterns, and habits will help determine the award categories, finalists, and winners. If proven successful, it will serve as one of the few awards platforms that are governed by the voice of the people.

The event will be held on March 5th in Mexico City, which is said to be the streaming capital of the world. This awards ceremony, which is a partnership between Spotify and Tuner Latin America, will be broadcast live around the world as well.
