CyberDog, a quadruped robotic dog inspired by bio-technology, is Xiaomi’s latest, major step toward autonomous robotics. Known as the world’s first open source robot companion, CyberDog is the culmination of Xiaomi’s engineering abilities.

Xiaomi’s CyberDog is the company’s first robotics effort aimed at quadrupeds for the open source community. The CyberDog project provides opportunities for robotic enthusiasts to co-create with other users.

A powerful, precision, agile robot,
A Xiaomi servo motor powers CyberDog’s actions, making it quick, agile, and able to move. CyberDog can carry out complicated actions such as backflips at high speeds of 3.2meters per second with a maximum torque of 32Nm/220rpm.

It’s powered by a NVIDIA JetsonTM XavierTM NX platform, an AI Supercomputer that supports 384 CUDA cores, 48 Tensor cores, a 6 Carmel ARM CPU, and two deep learning acceleration engines. The CyberDog’s sensor system captures massive amounts of data without detriment to overall perfomance.

The CyberDog is equipped with 11 high-precision sensors designed to simulate biological organisms. The sensors provide the robot with instant feedback to guide its movement. CyberDog can sense, analyze, and interact with the environment with the help of touch sensors, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, GPS modules, and other devices.

Interactions personalized by computer vision
CyberDog’s ability to perceive its surroundings is improved as a result of Xiaomi’s smartphone imaging technology. A variety of imaging sensors are integrated into the device, including AI interactive cameras, binocular ultra wide angle fisheye cameras, and a depth module from Intel RealSenseTM D450.

Vision sensor systems used for autonomous object tracking, SLAM, centimeter-scale obstacle avoidance, and navigation are integrated into this system. By doing this, CyberDog is able to make navigational maps, plot its destination, and analyze its surroundings in real-time. With a combination of human posture tracking and face recognition capabilities, CyberDog is able to follow its owner and turn around.

CyberDog can be controlled by setting a wake word or by using its accompanying remote control and smartphone app, which adds to its pet-like appearance. There are many uses for CyberDog, and there are countless possibilities for how it can be interacted with.

Developers can also integrate many third-party hardware add-ons or software systems, such as a search light, a panoramic camera, a motion camera, a LiDAR system, and more, into CyberDog since you have 3 type-C ports and one HDMI port.

Building Open Source Platforms to Develop New Abilities
Using open source algorithms, CyberDog reassembles and optimizes in-house developed core modules to achieve optimum performance. Xiaomi will also establish a robotics laboratory to allow engineers to pursue the possibility of future innovations, and it will also create a “Xiaomi Open Source Community” to share progress and results with developers worldwide.
