PLUS Malaysia Berhad and Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd have launched the EV Fast charging Modular and Portable Station at the Behrang Lay-by (Northbound). These integrated chargers, meant for the public, utilize solar panels and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to juice up electric vehicles. This is part of the plan to launch similar outlets across four states to support interstate EV use.

Speaking of the tie-up, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Gentari, and Chief Executive Officer, Gentari Green Mobility, Shah Yang Razalli, said, “This partnership with PLUS and the Malaysian Highway Authority represents a significant step forward in our efforts to boost the growth of the EV ecosystem in Malaysia while prioritizing the needs of our customers

A first of its kind for Malaysia, the rollout will be done in stages in 2023 and 2024 starting with four lay-bys along PLUS highways. The company says that each will have DC charging power up to 200kW, and for charging points per location.

These four states are Behrang Lay-by (Northbound and Southbound) in Perak and Senawang Lay-by (Northbound and Southbound) in Negeri Sembilan. Three more locations will be proposed at Ajil (Northbound and Southbound), and Perasing Rest and Service Area (R&R) sites, all on Lebuhraya Pantai Timur 2 (LPT2) in Terengganu.

Gentari also says that the AC charging points at existing PETRONAS petrol stations at PLUS R&R areas and lay-bys will be converted to DC Fast Charging points. The company will also deploy these points at additional PETRONAS petrol stations along PLUS highways and nearby locations by the end of 2024.

This is being done as part of the strategic highway planning initiative to support EV use across states. It will go a long way to alleviating any anxiety issues associated with electric vehicles that need to cross city limits.

Since its introduction in June 2022, Gentari has deployed 180 charging points in Malaysia and 160 in India through its affiliated entities. It also aims to capture over 10% market share of charge points and Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) offerings, across key markets in Asia Pacific.
