Samsung’s Galaxy Fold3 5G and Galaxy Flip3 5G have introduced to a new area of mobile computing. They’ve proven that folding screen technology is a viable replacement for large rigid ones. However, many people still have reservations about their service lives.

To alleviate concerns, Samsung designed innovative ways of developing and testing these devices in order to produce the durable, dependable foldable users love. In the absence of a time-tested blueprint, the company conducted thousands of trials, relying on diverse perspectives to develop a fresh new approach.

As a result, Samsung has developed all-new materials such as Armor Aluminum and optimized existing components on the layers of the display panel to ensure the highest level of durability. The Korean giant also found ways to strengthen the folding mechanism and ensure that the folding screens remain just as robust for several years.

Samsung uses patented technology to test these phones’ usability and water resistance. This includes grazing the S Pen across the area where the screen folds as well as dunking the phones ina body of water to prove their IPX8 water resistant.

These tests are performed in an environmental chamber to ensure that features like video playback, and components like cameras can function in a variety of climates – from dry to humid, and from hot to cold. A number of water resistance tests were carried out in different folding positions, including the Flex position, which proved the durability of the first water-resistant foldable smartphones.

Samsung tests the performance of its digitizer underneath its foldable display, including where the display folds, with S Pen drawing tests. For the new foldable to truly live up to their names, the Galaxy Z series devices are rigorously tested to outlast 200,0001 folds – or around five years of use if folded and unfolded 100 times a day. Folding test enhancements simulate real-world scenarios including unfolding and folding with both hands.
