Huawei believes ‘Plan B’ can dethrone Google

Huawei wholeheartedly believes that it can flourish without Google. It’s CEO, Ren Zhengfei told CNN in an interview that nothing would make the company happier than to rekindle its partnership with Google. The search giant was forced to sever ties with the Chinese manufacturer due to a ban imposed by the US government.

In that same interview, Ren said that if the situation didn’t improve soon, Huawei would be forced to focus its attention on ‘alternatives’. This could entail pushing HarmonyOS, Huawei’s own operating system in place of Android as at the de facto OS on all Huawei devices. If this should happen, the telecommunications giant will stick to this path, even if the ban is eventually lifted.

This statement was a thinly veiled warning to the US government, that Huawei is not to be trifled with. Ren believes that, come what may, his company will be a dominant player in the smartphone world and that the US can expect loses. Also, there could be long term effects for US based companies later on.

These are very strong words indeed, and despite what many skeptics might say, this threat should be taken seriously. Huawei is still flourishing despite the US trade ban, which speaks volumes of the company’s resilience in the face of great adversities. This strength is due in part to strong sales in China despite a drop in demand elsewhere.

If it is able to provide a stable platform that can rival that of Android, neighboring Asian markets could see it as a viable alternative to Google’s OS. That said, it will take decades before that will be possible. Android is the most widely used smartphone OS around the world (76% market share). Dethroning the king will take a significant amount of work and resources.
