Microsoft changes stance on Surface Laptop repairability
November 22, 2019 Off By Naveen VictorMicrosoft needs to be commended for improving repairability of its Surface laptop 3 and Surface Pro X. Unlike their respective predecessors, the new devices are held in place with screws, magnets and adhesive glue. They can be taken apart, easily, without damaging the case or internal fixtures.
iFixit, our favorite gadget teardown instructors, have taken apart both devices. They can attest to the vast improvement in repairability of both devices. It’s a marked departure from what we are used to seeing from Microsoft. That said, the Surface Pro X offers very little in the form of upgrade options. An SSD swap is all that you can do to it.
The Surface Laptop 3 has an improved design. Unlike previous versions, users can now choose between having a textured panel over the keyboard or one made of metal. Those who didn’t fancy the textured layout of the Surface Laptop 2, will be happy to know that Microsoft actually listened for once. An for the first time ever, the company is offering these devices with AMD Ryzen processors.
The last few months have revealed a startling revelation. Manufacturers such as Apple and Microsoft are actually taking the time to revisit users’ product dissatisfaction, and addressed them accordingly. Apple’s new 16-inch Macbook Pro is a testament to that. Its specs and practicality far outweigh its price tag – something that we haven’t been able to say about a Macbook in quite a while.
