Netflix Mints New Deal With Universal For Animated Films

Netflix has announced a multi-year licensing deal in the U.S. with Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) for animated feature films. It will begin after a 4 month window given to Peacock. It builds upon the streaming services current Illumination deal with Universal to now include DreamWorks Animation.

Movies like Minions: The Rise of Gru, DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys, and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish will be among the initial 2022 offerings. Netflx will also be able to license rights to the full Animated and Live Action slate from UFEG ( 4 years after release) and pick and choose titles from Universal’s movie library.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with UFEG to bring more films from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation to our Netflix audience,” said Colin Morawski, Director of Studio Licensing, Netflix.

“Netflix has been a terrific partner and we‘re thrilled to expand our relationship,” said Peter Levinsohn, Vice Chairman and Chief Distribution Officer, UFEG.

Universal is responsible for some of the biggest animation franchises in the world. This deal effectively allows Netflix to gain ground among the younger age group. A market segment that Disney considers its bread and butter.
