New Mac Pro will be built in the US

Apple has confirmed that its latest iteration of the Mac Pro, which is the company’s most powerful computer yet and aimed at professionals, will be built in Austin, Texas. This is inline with Cupertino’s commitment to support the US economy by engaging in commerce with more than a dozen American manufacturers and suppliers. Cementing this notion, Apple has said that it is on track to fill its commitment to invest $350 billion in the US economy by 2023.

“The Mac Pro is Apple’s most powerful computer ever and we’re proud to be building it in Austin. We thank the administration for their support enabling this opportunity,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. He later added, “We believe deeply in the power of American innovation. That’s why every Apple product is designed and engineered in the US, and made up of parts from 36 states, supporting 450,000 jobs with US suppliers.”

The new Mac Pro, unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June, will be manufactured at the same Austin facility where it’s predecessor has been built since 2013. Apple has admitted that the US manufacturing of the Mac Pro is possible due to a federal product exclusion that it is receiving for certain components.

Unlike the model it replaces, the new Mac Pro is designed as a modular platform. Due to this, upgrades for storage, graphics and other types of expansion from various manufacturers are possible. The previous model, nicknamed “The Apple Trash Can” only supported a limited number of upgrades. Due to space constraints and lack of supported hardware, it wasn’t held in high regard by creative professionals, which was its target demographic.

Though it’s yet to be seen, but the new Mac Pro should fair better because Apple has learnt from its past mistakes and provided consumers with what they want.
