Sony has just introduced the new iteration of its ever popular over the ear headphones. This new pair called the WH-1000XM4, builds upon the success of its predecessor with the introduction of newer technology that helps with audio quality and its music delivery.

These new headphones come with better noise cancelling performance with the ability to reduce high and mid frequency sounds. Each ear cup has two microphones dedicated to noise cancelling. The dual noise sensor technology captures ambient noises and passes the data to the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1.

The tech is said to be very effective and should help with music performance. Then, there’s adaptive sound control that senses where the wearer is, then adjusts the ambient sound settings for the ideal listening experience. Over time, it recognizes locations that are frequently visited such as gyms and cafes, then adjusts sound settings accordingly.

Sony says that this tech should keep the wearer isolated from the world around them, which coupled with great audio drivers, provide a rich listening experience. In addition to this, the new Bluetooth Audio SoC, senses and adjusts music and noise input at over 700 times per second.

Important Features:

  • Speak-to-Chat: The headphones can recognize when the wearer is trying to converse with someone, and immediately pauses the music. It waits for 30 seconds, and if it can’t detect the wearer speaking, resumes the last played track.
  • Hold To Pause: If you’re trying to catch an announcement about the next flight, place your right on the ear cup. The WX-1000XM4 then decreases the music volume and lets in ambient sounds.
  • Precise Voice Pickup Tech: Five microphones work to perform advanced audio signal processing to pick up voices during hands-free calls and Speak-To-Chat.
  • Wearing Detection: The proximity sensor and two accelerometers within the headphones can detect when it is being worn. If a wearer takes it off, the music stops. It resumes once the headphones are put back on.

The headphones also use Edge-AI, DSEE Extreme, a technology that rebuilds lost audio quality during digital compression. Edge-AI analyses music in real time and recognizes instruments, music genres and individual elements of each song. It then attempts to restore the original quality, for a richer listening experience.

These WH-1000XM4 is also compatible with 360 Reality Audio. When listening to music from a streaming service that’s supported, the technology adjusts the audio delivery to recreate the same depth and surround-sound experience. Sony says, it will feel as though you are actually there in person.
