Google has just announced that it is extending the lifetime of its chromebooks. Just like Android, the search giant sets a limit on how long it will support devices. Initially, chromebooks had relatively short life spans, 3 years. But over time, it was increased to 6 years. Now however, it has been extended to 8 years.

That’s not all, Google will faithfully send security updates and features to devices every 6 weeks. The move is part of an initiative to keep chromebooks in education institutions for longer periods of time. It is also giving administrators better control and management tools over fleet chromebooks.

Devices launched this year and beyond, like the Lenovo 10e Chromebook Tablet and Acer Chromebook 712, will receive support for 8 years. In fact, take a look at Google’s
Chrome Update Policy page for the full details and device list.

But, for Google to support this extended service life, the search giant has had to increase the list price of the Chrome Education Upgrade from $30 to $38. This way, schools get to keep their devices for longer and with up to date security patches.
