DJI, the same people who have made professional aerial drones accessible to the general consumer, are looking to pour further investments into the sector. If the lockdowns, quarantines and social distancing has taught us anything, its that we need to rethink and re-channel our efforts how we communicate data and manage our infrastructure.

The need for software automation and more capable drones has never been more apparent. That is why during the 5th annual AirWorks conference, DJI showcased several goals. The company hopes to spur further development in civilian drones and aerial imaging technology to help with tasks where humans can’t physically be present.

“COVID-19 has challenged drone innovators around the world to rapidly develop and scale new ways of working, and DJI is proud to showcase ideas demonstrating how the drone industry has responded to the pandemic and how we can chart a course to even more beneficial drone uses,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy and Communication at DJI.

DJI laid out several plans that the company feels will prove beneficial in key sectors:

Drone-based LiDAR Sensors
It has been investing in the tech through the company’s open innovation program, which has benefited the likes of Livox Technology Company. Livox has developed a new 498 gram lidar sensor that is compact and convenient to attach directly to DJI Matrice 200 and Matrice 300 series drones for 3D aerial mapping.

It has a detection range of 460 meters, high-density point clouds and supports up to 3 returns. And such such allows to more affordable and scalable lidar technology to be adopted by construction companies, public safety professionals, utility inspectors, engineers and those in several other sectors.

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS)
DJI has partnered with ESRI to bring highly integrated solutions for the AEC, urban planning, public safety, and energy industries.

New Mission Management Platform
DJI’s FlightHub software will evolve from a fleet and pilot management tool into a comprehensive mission management platform centered around flight operations. This help improve coordination between field operators and command centers.

New Developer Tools
Improvements have been made to DJI’s software development kit to enable third-party developers to create industry-specific applications and allow them better access to DJI’s resources.

Many sectors have adopted the use of aerial drones to help maintain and coordinate manufacturing processes, construction inspections, monitor farm crops and several other areas. In addition to this, the advancement in 5G technology will enable real-time data transmission for more reliable and accurate portrayal of ongoing processes.
