Honda City Hatchback Launched, Prices Start From RM75,670

December 7, 2021 Off By Rowena Cletus

Honda has officially launched the City Hatchback. Based on the ever-popular sedan, the hatchback features a more angular and busier rear-end and incorporates lessons learnt from the Jazz. The Japanese automaker has managed to increase structural rigidity by 6% compared to the Jazz for better collision safety.

But that isn’t all, special care was given towards noise and vibration reduction. As such, the car’s A and B pillars are filled with polyurethane spray foam and a variable thickness sound absorber is fitted under the engine compartment.

It also borrows the Jazz’s quirky rear seat design dubbed ULTRA Seats. It can be folded into 4 different configurations named Utility, Long, Tall and Refresh. Depending on how they are positioned, the City Hatchback can offer about 289-litres of boot space.

The City Hatchback is available to order as 4 different variants RS e:HEV, V, E, and S. The standard equipment is available to all 4 but the more premium stuff is reserved for the e:HEV and V models. The RS moniker of the e:HEV is indicative of the special treatment it receives in terms of trim fitments.

These standout features include a gloss black front grill, solid wing and door mirrors as well as a unique lower grill, fog garnish and rear bumper. Slotting below the e:HEV is the V, E and lastly the S. But we will get into that a little later.

In case you didn’t know, the RS e:HEV variant is the only hybrid in the line-up. The car uses a 1.5-litre intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) system, which consists of the petrol engine and 2 electric motors. This system is mated to an electric continuous variable transmission or e-CVT to deliver 109hp and an impressive 253Nm of torque.

Honda says that the system will allow drivers to get a smoother power delivery without compromising on full efficiency. Based on driving conditions, the e:HEV can switch between fully electric mode, hybrid or regular petrol mode. It’s supposed to provide a balance that traditional cars aren’t able to offer.

The V, E and S variants get the standard 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine mated to a CVT. It produces 121hp and 145Nm of torque. Despite the absence of electric motors, Honda believes that this powertrain still provides an ideal balance of driving enjoyment and respectable fuel efficiency.
