Huawei Introduces Next-Gen Server
April 29, 2020Chinese Electronics Giant unveils a new server for its enterprise customers
Huawei has introduced its next-gen server machine called the FusionServer Pro 2298 V5. It’s a 2U 2-socket storage rack server that is able to provide up to 450TB of storage capacity. Powering it is the Intel Xeon Cascade Lake processor with a base frequency of 3.9GHz and turbo boost up to 4.5GHz. There’s also support for Intel Optane DCmemory (DCPMM).
The platform supports more cores, higher hyper-threading processing capabilities and delivers 36% better performance than its predecessors. Speaking of improvement, this new FusionServer can store 24, 3.5-inch hard disks but only 4 of the smaller 2.5-inch drives. In addition to this, there are 4 slots for NVMe SSDs, in total, that’s 450TB of storage space.
Huawei hopes that the high storage density and the server’s relative compactness will entice enterprise customers who are seeking such features and in a scalable package. The company thinks that the server is also easy to maintain and manage, which should drive down O&M costs.
Also, the server can be tailored to suit a wide variety of purposes that include distributed storage, software-defined storage, big data analytics, video, data backup, archiving, and data-intensive warm and cold storage. There’s also support for the following:
- Supports SATA/SAS SSDs or PCIe NVMe SSDs as the cache, improving drive read/write performance.
- Provides diverse network ports, such as four PCIe 3.0 slots, two 10GE and two GE LOM ports, as well as one OCP mezzanine card 2.0.
- Supports two SATA M.2 SSDs with capacity options of 32, 64, 240, and 480 GB, and supports hot swap and hardware RAID.
A system called Dynamic Energy Management Technology (DEMT), Huawei’s own patented tech, is used to monitor and adjust power consumption to suit the server’s needs. This way, it helps reduce operating expenses without detriment to its usability.
The FusionServer Pro comes from a long line of servers made by Huawei. In total, the company has shipped 4.31 million servers around the world since 2012. Through its partnership with Intel the company plans to provide more of such solutions to its enterprise customers.
