Huawei’s Audio Lab in Shanghai is where the company continues to perfect its audio technologies. It’s also meant to strengthen its R&D work, which includes efforts to make class leading TWS earphones. The company has employed more than 500 acoustical engineers across its seven global R& D centers in places like Tokyo, Munich and Tampere in Finland.

The Shanghai Lab, which was launched last month, covers an area of 2000 square meters and consists of 7 zones. They include: Headset Call Lab, 3D Audio Lab, Headset Noise Cancellation Lab, Indoor Scenarios Lab, Hardware Innovation Lab, Audio Experience Research Lab, and In-car Scenarios Lab.

Inside this facility are two, objective earphone evaluation systems, one for active noise cancellation (ANC), and the other for sound quality. There’s also a Variable Acoustic Lab, used for testing and adjusting the audio playback effects on smartphones, tablets, PCs, speakers, Vision products, and home theatres in different listening environments.

That isn’t all, the space is also used to calibrate sound pickup during earphone calls. Huawei says that one of its labs is so quiet that the background noise is only about 9dBA. The Headset Call Lab develops a deep neural network (DNN) noise cancellation algorithm, which performs in-depth learning on over 500 types of noises and hundreds of millions of noise data records.

This includes crowded environments such as subways, cars, shopping malls, parties, bars, concerts, and outdoors. The Call Noise Cancellation Lab is used for various purposes including Intelligent Dynamic ANC and Pure Voice Call. Here, engineers work with sound quality adjustment and spatial audio effect evaluations.

Huawei says that it’s going all-in on these testing facilities to meet consumers’ high exemptions when it comes to wireless earphones, from noise cancellation, and sound quality to smart interactions.

Though a daunting task, the company says it continues to provide good audio solutions by covering the following: innovative components, cutting-edge algorithms, sound effect commissioning, and Bluetooth encoding and decoding.
