Quantum computing is considered the next evolutionary leap of the digital world. The binary computing systems of today have inherit limitations that are simply non-existent to their more sophisticated cousins. IBM, one of the pioneers in the field that include Intel and Google, is looking to encourage communities to embrace and learn more about this relatively new field.

On May 4th, 2016, IBM introduced the first quantum computer that could be programmed over the cloud by using the IBM Quantum Experience. The goal was to allow the average Joe, access to this technology, which was previously reserved for those in academic research labs.

According to IBM, it now has 18 quantum systems that are readily available to clients and the community. Through the use of said systems users can become accustomed with the new platform, develop applications of it for various industries or conduct fundamental research on quantum information science.

Besides the hardware side of things, IBM has also been driving the development of an open source quantum software called Qiskit, which is written primarily in Python. Over time, said program has grown in popularity thanks to several novel features.

In conjunction with the fourth anniversary of the IBM Quantum Experience, the company will be conducting an online challenge with four exercises. Said exercises will help improve participants understanding of quantum circuits while having ‘fun’ in the process.

The IBM Quantum Challenge begins at 9:00 a.m. US Eastern on May 4, and ends 8:59:59 a.m. US Eastern on May 8. To take the challenge, visit https://quantum-computing.ibm.com/challenges
