LG Electronics (LG) announced its intentions to set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduced through the manufacture of major LG products by 2030. This makes LG the first Korean entity to take part in the net zero campaign, Business Ambition for 1.5°C. A total of nearly 700 companies have announced their readiness to participate in the campaign led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in partnership with the CDP, United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

According to LG’s Zero Carbon 2030 initiative announced in 2019, the company will cut its total direct and indirect carbon emissions generated during production processes by half, compared to 2017. Through its Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiative, LG wants to reduce GHG emissions during the use phase of appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and residential air conditioners. LG’s report to the CDP this year showed that more than 80 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions were from the use phase of its major products.

“Having an eco-friendly product and service ready for future generations is in line with LG Electronics’ mid-to-long-term ESG strategy,” said Kim Joon-ho, executive vice president and head of the Quality Management Center”. LG is concentrating its efforts on sustainable solutions focused on net zero and the circular economy to ensure that future generations are able to live better lives and make a significant contribution to a better future.”

The SBTi’s science-based targets reflect the latest research and what is needed to meet the Paris Agreement’s stretch goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. LG will validate and review SBTi’s carbon emission reduction target for reducing emissions from production to use in its entire production process by 2030 based on scientific data.
