Nissan has launched the 2023 LEAF., which is an updated version of the 2019 model featuring subtle styling tweaks and improved driving dynamics. It’s a refreshed EV (electric vehicle) bringing it in line with the company’s current product portfolio.

The new car gets a full-black aero front grille with a new Nissan logo, headlights with integrated LED day time running lights that have black inner finishing. There’s also a redesigned rear that includes an aero spoiler with improved aerodynamics and a diffuser panel with grey accents. There’s also the 5-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels.

This new LEAF has a new badge on the steering wheel, a larger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to use Voice Recognition for certain features.

New safety features include Intelligent Lane Intervention & Intelligent Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, and Intelligent Rear View Mirror. Like most hatchbacks, the car can accommodate 5 occupants comfortably. The rear backrest has a 60/40 split, which when fully folded down, allows for a further increase from 435 litres of cargo space to 1,176 litres.

The LEAF has a 5-star safety rating from JNCAP (Japan New Car Assessment). It covers the collision testing of vehicles as well as various active safety systems. Being an EV, it underwent and passed the JNCAP’s electric shock protection tests which evaluate specific aspects of electric vehicles.

Powering the LEAF is a 110kW motor (148hp) which develops 320Nm of torque. Nissan says that it allows the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds. Unlike internal combustion engines (ICE) of traditional vehicles, an electric motor can deliver nearly 100% of its torque, instantly.

Based on the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) the LEAF can cover 311km on a single charge, which should be enough for urban commutes or city driving. When it comes to charging its 40kWh lithium-ion battery, there are three methods to get this done at home or while travelling.

The LEAF’s charging port can accept two types of connectors, the CHAdeMO for DC fast-charging up to 50kW or Type 2 (previously Type 1) for AC charging up to 6.6kW. In case of emergencies, there’s also a portable Type 2 cable that can plug into a regular 3-point electrical outlet.

Through the use of fast DC charging, you can get a full charge from empty in about an hour. If you’re using AC charging from a wall outlet, it will take 7 hours to achieve the same feat. For a limited period, customers who purchase the LEAF will receive a complementary 12 months of JomCharge membership worth RM600 for recharging their cars at public chargers.

There are 107 units AC Type 2 chargers and 30 units DC CHAdeMO quick chargers nationwide. The membership grants you 600 credits with which you can use to charge your vehicle. In addition to this, you’ll also receive a complimentary Ice Cool Tinting worth RM2,200.
