OnePlus admits to data breach, names and contact details stolen
November 24, 2019OnePlus has revealed that it suffered a data breach recently. An unauthorized party gained access to the company’s website/systems and stole user data that included names, contact numbers, email addresses and shipping information. However, payment information, passwords and account data were not accessed.
The Chinese phone maker has already sent emails to respective users informing them of what had happened. According to the company, the immediate implications of this issue are that impacted users may receive spam and phishing emails. This is a major blow to OnePlus considering that their devices are mainly marketed to enthusiasts who value user privacy.
Speaking of the issue in the OnePlus forum, its security team said, “We took immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security. Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident.”
“We are deeply sorry about this, and are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further such incidents. Please contact us with any questions or concerns at Customer Support.”
The incident was first discovered during routine monitoring of the company’s systems. The flaw has already been patched, but OnePlus will continue to upgrade their security program to prevent such an incident from reoccurring in the future.
