Partnership To Turn Ford GT40 Into EV
July 20, 2021Electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes. However, the least talked about versions of EVs are those of the restomod variety. Everrati is responsible for turning classic sports cars that started out life as fossil fuel guzzlers, into green, mean EV machines. One of its crowning achievements is the EV conversion of a Porsche 911 (964).
Now, the outfit has teamed up with kit car builders, Superformance to build EV versions of the legendary Ford GT40. In case you didn’t know, the latter has been building and distributing complete continuation Shelby Cobras, Daytona’s. Corvettes, Grand Sports and GT40 cars since 1994.
Both companies pride themselves on building continuation sports cars that preserve the heritage of the originals, but introduce more advanced systems. In this case, it involves reengineering the cars with state-of-the-art electric drivetrains. This includes the use of custom-designed electric motors and battery systems.
Superformance is known for building kit/component cars that celebrate the most iconic vehicles of all time. Said cars are exact replicas of the original, built under license from respective trademark holders such as Ford, GM, Shelby, SAFIR GT40. They can be configured to either have classic drivetrains or more modern ones (restomod).
Everrati and Superformance’ partnership will allow enthusiasts to drive electric powered GT40 cars. It’s a perfect way to preserve classic sports cars without further endangering the planet. Development of the first model is already underway. A prototype chassis has been built and is being adapted for the new electric propulsion system in the UK.
There is still considerable work left to do, such as battery placement and weight distribution to preserve the character and soul of the original car. Despite its age, the GT40 is still a very desirable vehicle to own. It’s success at Le Mans in the 1960s is a feat revered till this day.
