Samsung Galaxy Watch6 Series, What You Need To Know
July 27, 2023Samsung’s new Watch6 series aims to cater to a variety of needs. Just like in previous years, the company has released two models, the Watch6 and Watch6 Classic. The former comes in either a 40mm or 44mm case diameter while the latter comes in either 43mm or 47mm sizes.
The Watch6 sports a similar look to the standard Watch5 save for a more streamlined lug design. The Watch6 Classic, however, features a familiar design and rotating bezel that we liked on the Watch4 Classic.
This watch series now features a slimmer bezel and a 20% larger display without affecting the overall watch size. It’s a commendable achievement for Samsung. It’s brighter at 2,000 nits and with the adjustment for Always-On Display, the screen should be clearly legible even if viewed under direct sunlight.
The watches also benefit from more powerful hardware and a larger battery, which should improve overall usability. Despite this, Samsung claims that overall battery consumption is lower than before. In just eight minutes of quick charge, users can get about 8 hours of juice.
But that isn’t all, because under the skin, you also get a more interactive user experience and a whole host of new features. By incorporating sleep and wellness features, the watches now offer in-depth analysis of Sleep Score Factors. This includes total sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, plus physical and mental recovery to better understand their quality of sleep.
There’s also more individualized Sleep Messages, which is co-developed with the National Sleep Foundation. It gives users detailed feedback back of their overall sleep health each morning. Sleep Consistency tells the user their sleep and wake time and designates a Sleep Animal Symbol for their sleep type.
Sleep Coaching on the Watch6 series executes pre-defined sleep insights. That provides instructions, tips and reminders. When it’s time for bed, the watch can help automatically change the settings of your connected devices, it can mute notifications and dim the screens of both your watch and smartphone.
Then there’s the usual health and fitness settings like Body Composition that measures skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage, provides a complete snapshot of the user’s body and fitness. Personalized Heart Rate Zone defines 5 optimal running intensity levels to help users achieve their goals.
In addition to the over 100 existing workout trackers, the newly added Track Run can record a user’s performance on the track. Customized Workout allows users to build and track their workout routine.
Irregular Heart Rhythm notification for problems like Arterial Fibrillation (AFib) is present and so is the ECG and blood pressure monitoring. The Galaxy Watch6 series can measure skin temperate during the night to provide insight into menstrual cycle tracking. Fall detection, can detect when the wearer has fallen down and calls emergency services or pre-selected contact.
Integration of Samsung Wallet into the watch allows you to save your payment cards, personal information and passwords as well as important ticket details in one place. Gesture control allows users to manage device settings with simple movements for added convenience.
Integration of third-party apps like WhatsApp, allow you to read and answer messages directly on your watch. Google Calendar, Gmail and MyFitnessPal allow your watch to provide usable information while on the move. Soon, you should have streaming options with Audible so you can listen to audiobooks without the aid of a smartphone.
The introduction of the new Skin Temperature API, which is part of Samsung’s Privileged Health software development kit (SDK) allows third party developers to use advanced infrared technology. Apps like the newly launched Thermo Check can measure temperature around you as well as the temperature of the water before you go for a swim.
The Galaxy Watch6 Series ais available to pre-order now but should be available on store shelves starting on August 11.
