Chromecast Has Turned 9, Here’s Why It’s Still Alive And Kicking

Google introduced us to Chromecast in 2013 as a means to share content from multiple devices to a single TV. It didn’t matter if said content was a collection of vacation photos or a funny YouTube video, the puck sized device would take them and cast the content directly to the TV or projector that was connected to it.

4 Reasons Why You Need A Chromecast
Chromecast And Why It’s A Game Changer
Over the years, Google has improved on the formula and introduced support for higher resolutions and with the latest model, Chromecast With Google TV, a dedicated remote control. Compared to the first iteration that debuted 9 years ago, the new model is a far more capable device but that doesn’t mean that the older ones have been rendered obsolete.

Cast Your CCTV Camera Feed
Smart CCTV cameras that are compatible with Google Home allow their content to be cast via a Chromecast to your TV. The best part is, this can be done by saying, “Ok Google, cast my camera to the living room TV”. Admittedly, the experience is either a hit or miss. Now however, there’s decent support for live video streaming for Nest Cams and Nest Doorbells.

Mirror Android Screen or Chrome Tab on Your TV
The feature is built into your Android operating system and Chrome browser. Look for the casting icon in your Android quick panel or the top right-hand corner of the Chrome Browser. Expect about a second or two lag in response time due to the time needed to communicate with a router/access point.

Cast Meetings On The TV
Through the use of the Google Meet app, you can cast your active meetings to your Chromecast connected TV while still being able to use your device’s camera, microphone and audio feed.

Shared Queue allows multiple users to line up to share content on a TV
The YouTube app allows you and others who are connected to the same Wi-Fi network to cast YouTube videos by taping the Cast icon, then adding them to a shared playlist. Videos on the list will be played in succession until you’ve reached the end of said list.

Dedicated UI and Remote
Chromecast with Google TV has a standalone operating system that can be used to access your streaming apps without the aid of a smartphone or PC. The UI is similar to that of Smart TVs, which allows you to navigate it through the use of a dedicated remote. Older generation Chromecast devices didn’t have either one, which reduces them to a “supporting” role only.

Cast And Forget
Regardless of which generation Chromecast you use, once you’ve cast content from your phone, tablet or PC to it, the device operates independently. It’s only once it’s finished playing said content, does it require the user to select or cast other content to it.
