Google Ending Support For Older Android Devices

August 1, 2021 Off By Naveen Victor

If you’re still holding on to a device that’s running on Android 2.3.7 or older, we have some bad news for you. Google will officially end support for consumer devices that are running on the aforementioned software version or something older. The Search giant broke the news on its support page discovered by Liliputing.

This is the gist of it:

“Google will no longer allow sign-in on Android devices that run Android 2.3.7 or lower starting September 27, 2021. If you sign into your device after September 27, you may get username or password errors when you try to use Google products and services like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.”

Apparently, from said date, Google will only support devices that are running on Android 3.0 or higher. If your grandma’s smartphone can’t be updated beyond Android 2.3.7, it will have to be put to pasture and replaced with something newer. However, this is only applicable to the use of apps like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.

According to Google, you can still access said services via the phone’s web browser. As such using the the url of Gmail.com or YouTube.com, should let you eik out several more months out of aging Android devices. That said, it would be best to keep your Android devices up to date with the latest software releases and security patches.

Take a look at the Android support page for more details.
