Google’s new Pixel Buds Pro builds upon the foundation that made the regular device a desirable option to Android users. It comes with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that uses a custom 6-core audio chip running on the Search giant’s own algorithm. This and the speaker drivers have been tuned by the in-house audio engineering team.
This serves as proof that Google has taken a page out of Apple’s playbook. Instead of handing over the bulk of the work to a third-party manufacturer, the company has chosen to play a larger role in the R&D stage. The fruits of said labor come in the form of Silent Seal. It’s a feature that allows the Pixel Buds Pro to adapt to your ear shape to minimize sound leakage.
It also maximizes the amount of noise that can be canceled out through ANC. There are built-in sensors that measure pressure in your ear canal to ensure that both buds are comfortable to wear during prolonged use. The point is to increase comfort and to remove the irritating plugged ear experience exhibited by most earbuds with silicone ear tips.
Volume EQ helps adjust the music delivery so that the highs, mids and lows remain consistent when you turn up or down the volume. It aims to provide a more balanced music listening experience. Google will add spatial audio to the Pixel Buds Pro later this year.
The experience, the company says, is supposed to be kin to being “in the middle of the action” for spatial audio-supported movies or TV shows. It will work on compatible Pixel phones. Google also says that the Pixel Buds Pro will provide clear call quality even if there’s a lot of ambient noise around you, which includes the effect of taking a brisk walk on a windy day. Transparency mode lets ambient noise in so that you can be kept aware of what’s happening around you, similar to how Samsung, OPPO and Sony earphones tend to work.
With multipoint connectivity, the Pixel Buds Pro can automatically switch between your paired Bluetooth devices such as Android or iPhones as well as PCs and TVs. This is great news if you shuffle between devices throughout the day.
The earbuds are rated for IPX4 water resistance but the case is only IPX2 water resistant. You can choose between four different two-tone colored designs: Coral, Lemongrass, Fog and Charcoal. Regardless of which one you choose, the case only comes in one color: White.
If you’re interested in picking one up, you can pre-order the Pixel Buds Pro on July 21 for $199. They are being marketed as premium wireless earbuds that should be positioned to take on other “pro” offerings by mainstream manufacturers.
