Google Will Impose 15GB Limit On Your Photos
November 12, 2020Remember when we thought Google Photos was our savior in terms of online storage? Well, that’s about to change. In the past, the Search giant has allowed us to store a countless number of photos in the cloud by selecting the “High Quality” option instead of the respective media’s original quality. Come 1st June, 2021, that will change.
After said date, users will be limited to a 15GB storage limit. But here’s the kicker, this is a cumulative quota for all the services that you use including Google Drive and Gmail. If you would like more space, You’ll need to pay for a Google One plan, which starts at $1.99 per month for 100GB of storage space. And with it, you get access to Google experts, shared family plans etc.
That said, photos that are backed up to Google Photos before 1st June, 2021, will not count against the 15GB limit. Whatever you store from now till the deadline, will be exempt from the storage quota. If you’re using a Pixel phone (Pixel 1-5), you will not be affected by the new rules, even after the June 2021 deadline.
Google has also introduced a “personalized estimate” tool that aims to provide insight into how many more photos you can store given your current storage capacity. In June 2021, the company will introduce a new tool in the Photos app to help users manage backed up photos and videos.
Though this news may be shocking to some, we can’t say that we’re surprised. Now that, most people have smartphones and the majority of their needs are met through the use of Google’s services, the company’s cloud servers are beginning to face certain challenges. In terms of storage capacity. It’s a finite limit, which we will experience first hand on 1st June 2021.
