Huawei Replaces Legacy ERP System with MetaERP
May 12, 2023 Off By Rowena CletusIn a major development, Huawei recently announced the replacement of its legacy Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system with its newly developed MetaERP system. This transition marks a significant milestone for the company as it gains complete control over its core business operations.
The journey began in 1996 when Huawei introduced the Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) II system. Over time, this system evolved into the ERP system through several iterations, becoming the backbone of Huawei’s global enterprise operations for more than two decades. Supporting business activities across 170 countries and regions, the legacy ERP system facilitated Huawei’s growth, generating billions of dollars in revenue each year.
However, in 2019, Huawei faced mounting external pressures and encountered various business challenges. As a result, the company embarked on an ambitious project to develop its own MetaERP system, aiming to achieve full autonomy and control. This transformation initiative has been Huawei’s most extensive and intricate undertaking to date.
Over the past three years, Huawei invested significant resources and collaborated with industry and ecosystem partners to overcome the associated obstacles. Today, the new MetaERP system, which is future-oriented, ultra-large-scale, and cloud-native, has successfully replaced the old ERP system.
The MetaERP system has seamlessly integrated into all of Huawei’s business scenarios, covering 100% of its operations and processing 80% of its business volume. Notably, MetaERP has already undergone rigorous testing for monthly, quarterly, and yearly settlements, demonstrating impeccable performance with zero faults, zero delays, and zero accounting adjustments.
Tao Jingwen, Huawei’s Board Member and President of the Quality, Business Process & IT Management Department, expressed pride in their achievement, stating, “We faced a significant setback when we were cut off from our old ERP system and other core operation and management systems more than three years ago. However, not only have we successfully built our own MetaERP, but we have also managed the transition and proved its capabilities.”
What sets MetaERP apart is Huawei’s complete ownership and control over the entire stack. The system has been developed in tandem with other Huawei technologies, including EulerOS and GaussDB. Furthermore, Huawei has collaborated with its partners to incorporate cutting-edge advancements such as cloud-native architecture, metadata-driven multi-tenant architecture, and real-time intelligence into MetaERP.
These enhancements have significantly improved service efficiency and operational quality. Guided by their principles, Huawei has focused on creating a simple yet robust architecture that delivers the best possible experience at the lowest possible costs.
