Spotify HiFi Aims To Put Studio Quality Music In Our Ears

Spotify will be bringing better audio quality to its music streaming platform. In a recent blogpost, the company said that for ‘select markets’ it will be introducing CD-quality, lossless audio format. This should be music to the ears of audiophiles who want to take full advantage of their high-end headphones or speakers.

The dawn of music streaming services like Spotify and iTunes now Apple Music, have hampered the circulation of lossless quality media formats. CDs or Compact Discs, which are now considered relics of the modern age, is the last avenue for those who want to enjoy and apprecate high quality music. But it seems like that might not be the case anymore.

it’s called Spotify HiFi and it will be made available to Premium subscribers, in certain markets. The objective here is to deliver lossless audio, enabling users to listen to their favorite tracks in the way the artists intended. this may sound like another cliché, but if Spotify can deliver on its promise, we could be looking at a game changing experience.

In case you didn’t know Spotify currently uses a compressed audio format called OGG. it’s an open source lossy format that reduces a track’s file size by partial discarding data. A more popular format that uses similar principles is MP3. Both these formats ‘water down’ music tracks to a fraction of its original size. This way, songs can be downloaded/streamed quickly.

Generally and with cheap audio gear, you won’t notice a substantial loss in audio quality when moving from lossless to OGG or MP3. It’s only when you’re using good quality headphones or earbuds do the differences become shockingly clear. There’s no substitute for crystal clear, lossless audio quality. MP3 and OGG make it more convenient to listen to music – that is all.

Spotify HiFi will be rolled out later this year but your guess is as good as ours with regards to when or where it will make its first appearance. Spotify is also working closely with the world’s biggest speaker manufacturers to make the new service accessible to as many fans as possible through Spotify Connect.

We wait with bated breath for the new HiFi experience. If you’re as interested in this lossless audio format, it would be best to invest in good audio gear to get the best experience possible.
