Search giant will extend its reach far beyond AI voice assistance, it will also be your fitness guru

It’s no longer a secret, Google is in the process of acquiring Fitbit for approximately $2.1 billion. The move will effectively give the search giant the keys to the fitness wearables kingdom, which the latter has dominated over the past several years. The company has sold over 100 million devices worldwide and currently commands a 28 million active user-base.

Fibit’s business model is centered around fitness wearables that not only track your fitness activities, but perpetually coerces you into maintaining an active lifestyle. It has an extensive product portfolio of fitness wearables catering to the needs of a very diverse customer-base. The devices range from humble step trackers to smartwatches with fitness functionality.

And now with big G at the helm, Fitbit believes that the search giant’s deep pockets will help hasten development. This will allow them to scale faster and reach a larger demographic than before. The ability to use Google’s global platform will give the company the edge it needs to stay ahead of the competition and continue to develop innovative products.

Fitbit also wants to reassure its user-base that, despite the acquisition, privacy is still of paramount importance to the company. Fitbit users will still be in control of their data and the company will remain transparent about how it collects data and what it does with it. Fitbit will not sell personal information nor will the acquired data be used for Google ads.

The acquisition should be completed next year, but the exact details have yet to be disclosed. We presume that it will take a fair amount of time for the creases to be ironed out, before the eventual takeover.
