Samsung 990 EVO SSD Nearly 50% Faster Than 970 EVO

Samsung has announced its new blazingly fast NVMe SSD, the 990 EVO. Compared to its predecessor, the 970 EVO Plus, it offers 43% better performance. Sequential read speeds are up to 5,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and write speeds up to 4,200 MB/s. Random read and write speeds are up to 700K input/output operations per second (IOPS) and 800K IOPS, respectively.

Samsung says that by using Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to link to the host processor’s DRAM, the SSD can achieve optimized performance even with a DRAM-less design. Compared to contemporary SSDs, users can experience significantly faster loading speeds for games and swift access to large files.

Power efficiency has improved by up to 70% compared to its predecessor, which should limit its impact on a laptop’s battery life. Support for Modern Standby enables an instant on/off function even in low-power states. The 990 EVO’s heat spreader label helps regulate the thermal condition of the NAND chip, which allows it to run at peak performance for longer without overheating.

Samsung’s M.2 form factor SSD supports both PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces, offering compatibility, thermal control, and power savings for the PCIe 5.0 interfaces for upcoming applications. Slated for release next month in Malaysia, the 990 EVO will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacity options. For more information visit samsung.com/SSD.
